En espanol tenemos DOS verbos: SER y ESTAR.
En ingles, solo hay UNO: TO BE, que significa ambos.

In Spanish there are TWO verbs: SER and ESTAR.
In English there is only ONE: TO BE, which means both.

Solo se usa con "I".

¿Cuando es SER y cuando es ESTAR? When is it SER and when is it ESTAR?

El contexto de la oracion te dice cual es.

The sentence's context tells you which one.

Cuando significa SER (caracteristicas permanentes):

I am a student.

Yo soy estudiante. (identidad)

She is tall.

Ella es alta. (caracteristica fisica)

We are from Mexico.

Somos de Mexico. (origen)

It is 3 o'clock.

Son las 3. (hora)

Cuando significa ESTAR (estados temporales / ubicacion):

I am happy.

Yo estoy feliz. (estado de animo)

She is at school.

Ella esta en la escuela. (ubicacion)

We are tired.

Estamos cansados. (estado temporal)

They are eating.

Estan comiendo. (accion en progreso)

Contracciones Contractions

En ingles hablado, se usan contracciones (formas cortas):
